In today’s digital era, protecting sensitive information is a top priority for businesses. At We Are Fiber, we are proud to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to information security by obtaining the prestigious ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification.

This certification is proof of our constant commitment to ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive data, and shows our dedication to safeguarding information and delivering secure BPO services to our clients, including overflow management and call center activities based in Albania but operating everywhere!

With the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification, we give top priority to information security, offering peace of mind and guaranteeing the highest standards of data protection.

About ISO/IEC 27001:2013

ISO/IEC 27001:2013 is an internationally recognised standard for information security management systems (ISMS). Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard provides a framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and continuously improve their information security systems.

ISO/IEC 27001:2013 sets out a systematic approach to identifying, assessing and managing information security risks, ensuring that appropriate controls and safeguards are in place to protect valuable information assets.

Our journey to ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification

Aware of the critical issues surrounding information security in our operations, we embarked on a journey to obtain the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification.

This journey began with a thorough assessment of information security risks and the development of robust security policies and procedures. We Are Fiber established an information security management system comprising several elements, including:

1. Risk assessment

We conducted a detailed assessment of our information security risks, identifying vulnerabilities, possible threats and the potential impact of security breaches. This assessment formed the basis of our implementation and risk-control strategies.

2. Implementation of security controls

We Are Fiber implemented a set of security controls to mitigate the identified risks and safeguard its information assets. These controls included technical, physical and administrative measures, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive information.

3. Employee awareness and training

We recognised that information security is a collective responsibility. Therefore, we provided comprehensive training programmes and ran awareness campaigns to educate and empower our employees to adhere to security policies, recognise potential threats and respond appropriately.

4. Incident Response and Recovery

The company developed robust incident response and recovery plans to promptly address potential security incidents. These plans ensured a rapid and effective response to minimise the impact of any security breaches and enable business continuity.

5. Continuous monitoring and evaluation

We Are Fiber established a system for the continuous monitoring and evaluation of our information security measures. This involved regular assessments, audits and reviews to identify any gaps or areas for improvement. By staying vigilant and proactive, we ensure that our security controls remain effective and aligned with evolving threats and industry best practices.

6. Regulatory compliance

Compliance with laws, regulations and industry standards is a top priority for We Are Fiber. We implemented provisions to ensure that our information security procedures align with the applicable regulatory requirements, such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), HIPAA (health information confidentiality) or PCI DSS (the information security standard managed by the PCI Security Standards Council). By staying up to date with evolving regulations, we ensure that our information security management system remains compliant, offering our clients maximum peace of mind.

ISO 14001:2015 is an internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), it provides a framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and continuously improve their environmental management practices. ISO 14001:2015 sets out a systematic approach to identifying, controlling and minimising the environmental impacts of an organisation’s activities, products and services.

It encourages organisations to adopt environmentally responsible practices, reduce waste production, conserve resources, mitigate pollution and comply with the relevant environmental regulations.

We Are Fiber’s journey to ISO 14001:2015 certification

We Are Fiber recognised the importance of the environmental sustainability of its operations, and therefore seeks to align its practices with global standards.

For us, it is essential to improve the well-being of the communities where we operate and to commit to building a better future for everyone. That is why, on 3 February, We Are Fiber decided to dress in red, in an effort to draw attention to cardiovascular problems and potentially save lives.

This month, our company focused on:

Health promotion

We sought to promote a healthy lifestyle by giving employees access to healthy food alternatives, encouraging physical activity, and more.

Education and awareness

We Are Fiber uses all available programs and resources to educate communities about the causes and risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, as well as the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Different types of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, such as coronary heart disease, stroke and hypertension. They are responsible for over 17 million deaths each year, about 31% of all deaths globally, most of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. The risk factors for cardiovascular disease are well known and include smoking, an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and high blood pressure.

Below are some of the most common types of CVD:

1. Coronary heart disease: occurs when the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart narrow or become blocked, causing chest pain or a heart attack.

2. Stroke: occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. It causes brain damage and can lead to disability or death.

3. Hypertension (high blood pressure): occurs when the blood pressure in the arteries is consistently too high, straining the heart and blood vessels and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

4. Congenital heart disease: refers to heart conditions present at birth, such as a “hole in the heart” or a malformed heart valve.

5. Arrhythmias: abnormal heart rhythms that can be caused by heart dysfunction.

6. Heart failure: occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, causing breathlessness and fatigue.

7. Peripheral arterial disease: occurs when the blood vessels that supply blood to the legs and feet narrow or become blocked, causing pain and reduced circulation.

8. Aortic aneurysm: bulging and weakening of the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

9. Cardiomyopathy: a condition in which the heart muscle becomes enlarged, thick or stiff, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively.

What recommendations do we give to our staff members (and beyond) to help them prevent cardiovascular disease?

For most cardiovascular diseases there is no cure, but many can be managed effectively with appropriate medical care and lifestyle changes. The specific treatment plan for a person with CVD will depend on the type and severity of the condition.

However, several measures can be taken to help prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD):

1. Follow a healthy diet: a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Limit the intake of saturated and trans fats, added sugars and salt.

2. Maintain a healthy weight: being overweight or obese increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and a balanced diet can help reduce the risk.

3. Exercise regularly: physical activity can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving cardiovascular tone, lowering blood pressure and maintaining a healthy weight. It is important to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days of the week.

4. Stop smoking: smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and quitting can significantly reduce the risk.

5. Limit alcohol consumption: drinking too much alcohol can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day for women and two for men.

6. Manage stress: chronic stress can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease; therefore, it is important to find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, relaxation techniques or counselling.

7. Control high blood pressure: hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Regular monitoring and management of hypertension can help reduce the risk.

8. Keep your health in check: conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol can increase the risk of CVD; therefore, it is important to keep these conditions under control with medication, lifestyle changes and regular monitoring.

It is important to work with your doctor to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your specific needs.

It is also important to know that these steps can also help prevent the development of other chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

Finally

Join us in our mission to improve heart health and reduce cardiovascular disease. As responsible corporate citizens, we have a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on the health of our communities. Act today and join the fight against one of the leading causes of death.

Did you know that November is the official month dedicated to diabetes awareness?

World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14 November to pay tribute to Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin in 1922 and was born on this very day. During this month, We Are Fiber aims to raise awareness of the risk factors, symptoms and different types of diabetes.

This activity is extremely important to us because we care about the health of our employees. We hope that during this month we can have a positive impact on the company and raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This also applies to all our readers. Pay attention to your health!

What we offered our employees during this month:

First of all, we provided our employees with detailed information on prediabetes and diabetes and on how to prevent or delay these medical conditions. We gave all our employees the opportunity to have a free blood-sugar test. And employees with a blood glucose level higher than normal were given the possibility of undergoing further tests and receiving a free consultation from an endocrinologist.

So, what exactly is diabetes?

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), i.e. the United States agency for disease control and prevention, diabetes is a chronic, long-lasting health condition that affects how the body turns food into energy. The body breaks down most of the food eaten into sugar (glucose) and releases it into the bloodstream.

When the glucose level rises, this signals the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin acts as a key, facilitating the entry of glucose into the body’s cells to then be turned into energy.

With diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it as it should. When there is not enough insulin or the cells stop responding to insulin, too much glucose remains in the bloodstream. Over time, this can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss and kidney disease. Below we will briefly explain the 2 main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce insulin, which, as we mentioned earlier, is a hormone in the pancreas that breaks down carbohydrates into glucose in order to produce energy. Insulin therapy helps the pancreas function correctly. Many children suffer from type 1 diabetes, although it can affect people of any age and background.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease, in which the body is unable to process its own insulin well enough to keep glucose at normal levels. The risks of suffering from type 2 diabetes increase if you are overweight, if you are over 45, if diabetes runs in the family, if you lead a sedentary life and if you have been diagnosed with prediabetes. Losing weight is a fundamental preventive measure. Habitual alcohol consumers and smokers are also at risk of developing diabetes.

Other types of diabetes
Gestational diabetes – Appears during pregnancy, when the woman has given birth to a baby weighing more than 4 kg.

LADA diabetes – A type of diabetes caused by the attack of antibodies against the pancreatic cells, insulin or the enzymes involved in the functioning of the pancreas. Prediabetes – With prediabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

A large number of people in the world suffer from prediabetes. Only 1 in 2 people with prediabetes knows they have it. This condition often goes undetected and therefore untreated. The clinical signs are not detected and, in most cases, patients do not even notice them. How life-threatening is diabetes compared to other well-known diseases?
Well, it might be shocking to reveal since the statistics on this question are incredible. Let’s look at the mortality rates of diabetes compared to those of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

In 2021, there were about 6.7 million deaths due to diabetes and 1 million people became blind. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower-limb amputation.

On the other hand, as for the statistics of the other diseases in 2021: there were 0.65 million deaths from HIV/AIDS, 1.6 million deaths from tuberculosis and 0.6 million deaths from malaria.

Is there a cure for diabetes?

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for diabetes. Scientists are currently working on an innovative weight-management study to help people put type 2 diabetes into remission. Remission occurs when blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels are back to a normal range.

Dick Gregory, an activist, argued that “people with high blood pressure, diabetes – these are conditions caused by lifestyle. If you change your lifestyle, they will go away.” Even if this might not be 100% true, for some of the reasons we mentioned earlier, there is a grain of truth in what he claims.

Changing your lifestyle can lead to normalizing blood glucose levels, even without medication. This does not mean a complete cure, because type 2 diabetes, for example, is a chronic disease, but the changes will nonetheless be evident! The life of a person with diabetes can improve in an unimaginable way.

What do we suggest to our employees (and everyone else)?

Not much, other than to take care of your health!
There are probably a few things you meant to do that could improve your health. Whatever your goals, there is never a better time than the present to take care of yourself.
This might involve preparing a healthier lunch, taking more walks or scheduling an appointment with a doctor. You can involve colleagues in these activities so you get to know each other even better during this adventure.
We suggest launching a challenge:
If you want to start drinking more water, you can launch a challenge on who can refill their water bottle the most in a day, during office hours.

Or to see who can take the most steps each day or during the weekend (and show the results every Monday).
To summarize and support you, below you will find a list of everything you need to do to prevent or keep diabetes under control:

1 – Lose excess weight
2 – Regular physical activity: brisk walking, cycling, running or swimming; start with 5-10 minutes a day; 3-5 days a week; then try to do a total of 150 minutes a week.
3 – Take at least 10,000 steps a day
4 – Eat healthily
5 – Limit animal fats (beef, cheese, fatty meats)
6 – Limit fats in general (less oil and fried foods)
7 – Consume as much fibre as possible
8 – Eat more fruit and vegetables every day
9 – Weight maintenance

Remember to have regular check-ups. Do not wait for the disease to do its damage before treating it. Prevention is the best medicine!

We Are Fiber pays extreme attention to health issues because, without health, nothing else matters. We make sure our employees are aware of health-related problems and we do our best to make them feel safe, protected and cared for in their work environment.

Did you know that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer? Fortunately, breast-cancer mortality rates have steadily decreased from 1989 until today. This decrease is believed to be the result of greater awareness, early screening and more effective treatments.

However, mortality rates show only a slight decrease in recent years, which means it is still important to raise awareness and prevent it.

In this Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, We Are Fiber stands in solidarity with “Pink October”, the month dedicated to awareness and support for the awareness, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The goal of We Are Fiber is to urge and support its employees to pay greater attention to their health.

Here is what our employees received this month:

· Free analysis

· Free breast ultrasound

· Free CA 15-3 (tumour antigen test)

Plus a free swab for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginal infections.

When it comes to health, We Are Fiber offers its employees only the best. We offered all women over the age of 30 the free diagnostic tests mentioned above, at the Microtest Diagnostics Health Clinic.

During the Pink October campaign, we don’t just dress in pink!

From 26 to 28 October, all employees wore pink ribbons to raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer. On 28 October, all We Are Fiber employees dressed in pink to raise awareness of the cause. These small details are very meaningful to us because they remind our employees of the seriousness of this disease and the impact it has not only on women but on the entire community. Every ribbon makes a difference, as it represents a reminder for every strong woman fighting her battle against cancer. But not only that: it is a reminder for everyone that early diagnosis is the best form of prevention!

This month, our CSR goal is to raise awareness of this cause among everyone who gravitates around We Are Fiber and to make breast-cancer fighters and survivors, as well as their loved ones, feel more united. No one fights alone and no one should have to. Here is everything you need to know about this malignant tumour:

Early diagnosis is the most effective treatment!

Breast cancer is often discovered after symptoms appear, but many women who have it initially have no symptoms. This is why regular breast screening is so important. The We Are Fiber tests provided as part of this CSR help detect breast cancer. And, in the event of a concerning result on the screening test (ultrasound) or the analyses, doctors will refer the patients (who in this case are our employees) for further investigation.

But let’s take it step by step: what is a normal breast and what does it look like?

Knowing the appearance and feel of your own breasts is important. No two breasts are the same. What is normal for you might not be for another woman. Most women report having lumpy or irregular breasts. Having your period, becoming pregnant, having children, losing or gaining weight and taking certain medications can have an impact on the appearance and feel of your breasts. As you age, your breasts also tend to change.

It is important to know the appearance and feel of your breasts in order to detect any changes.

However, mammographic screenings should be routine tests carried out once a year, even if you have not noticed any change.

On the subject of changes, here are some of the most common symptoms of breast cancer.

Which symptoms should you watch out for?

The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass (although most breast lumps are not cancerous). If it is a hard, painless mass with irregular edges, it is likely to be a tumour. However, it can also be soft, round or cause pain. It is important to emphasize that the symptoms of breast cancer can be different. In fact, as we have already said, some people might have no signs or symptoms. This is why we keep emphasizing the importance of regular screening.

Other warning signs of breast cancer can be:

· Swelling of all or part of the breast (even if no lumps are felt)

· Dimples on the skin (sometimes they look like an orange peel)

· Breast or nipple pain

· Nipple retraction (inward)

· Reddened, dry, flaky or thickened nipple or breast skin

· Nipple discharge (other than breast milk, including blood)

· Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone (this can be a sign of the cancer spreading even before it is large enough to be felt by palpation).

· Any change in the size or shape of the breast. It is important to keep in mind that many of these symptoms can also be caused by benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions, and only by undergoing medical examinations is it possible to find out. In addition, it is important to remember that knowing the symptoms is not a substitute for regular breast-cancer screening.

These examinations help detect breast cancer early, before symptoms appear. Learning about breast cancer in time means greater chances of successful treatment. It is also important to remember that these symptoms could occur due to other conditions not related to cancer.

Breast cancer awareness campaign – not just for a month!

“Pink October” reminds us that our support for those fighting against cancer should not be limited to a single month. Through this social responsibility project, We Are Fiber intends to demonstrate and highlight to its staff that their health is our priority. One of our main pillars is the social impact that We Are Fiber has on its employees and beyond. Therefore, take care of yourself and do not neglect your health!
